LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Sept. 1, 2024) — The Little Rock Zoo is set to host a special event on Tuesday, Sept. 10, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its cherished “Over-the-Jumps Carousel.” The celebration will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience one of the city’s most iconic attractions.
Built in 1924, the “Over-the-Jumps Carousel” is the last fully operational model of its kind in the world. What makes this ride distinct is that the entire carousel moves together, unlike typical carousels where individual horses move independently. Only four of these carousels were ever constructed.
Originally saved from demolition in 1942, the carousel was relocated to War Memorial Park Amusement Park. Under the guidance of renowned restoration expert Becky Witsell, the ride underwent a painstaking restoration process. Witsell and her team carefully removed over 30 layers of paint, revealing the original colors of the horses and chariots. In 2007, the carousel found its permanent home at the Little Rock Zoo.
Witsell’s apprentices have maintained the historic ride over the years, but in 2023, artisan Michael Crenshaw of the Little Rock Repair Shop was commissioned to restore the carousel’s 40 horses and four sleighs. His work ensured the preservation of the carousel’s historical authenticity.
“The ‘Over-the-Jumps Carousel’ is a physical connection to Little Rock’s past,” said Zoo Director Susan Altrui. “It’s incredible to think about how many generations of families have enjoyed it, and if the carousel could talk, it would have so many stories to share.”
The event, sponsored by Centennial Bank, will include live entertainment, free carousel rides, historical exhibits, games, and activities. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase, and light complimentary snacks will also be offered.
Guests can learn more about the history of this one-of-a-kind attraction and are encouraged to donate to the Arkansas Zoological Foundation, which oversees the maintenance and preservation of the carousel.
This celebration promises to be a memorable event, giving visitors a chance to reflect on the lasting legacy of this beloved Arkansas landmark.
